CCPL Code of Conduct

Welcome to the library! We are happy to provide you with library materials and any assistance you may need. Please help us to provide a safe, orderly and pleasant environment by complying with our Code of Conduct:

Abide by the law.

Verbal or physical threats to library staff or patrons; fighting; intoxication; weapon, alcohol or illegal drug possession on the premises; or violation of any Federal, State, or local ordinance is strictly prohibited.

Offenders will be asked to leave immediately and the Sheriff’s Office will be notified.

Be respectful of others.

Unruly or inappropriate behavior, including but not limited to: running or engaging in horseplay; disturbing or distracting others; ringing cell phones; loud talking or laughing; and/or offensive language is not permitted.

Be respectful of the library.

Consuming food or drink (with the exception of bottled water) outside the meeting rooms; smoking or vaping inside a library building or on library grounds; littering; removal of library materials without following established lending procedures; careless handling of library materials; tampering with or inappropriate use of public computers; misuse of restrooms; and/or defacing property are all prohibited.

Should an incident occur:

  1. Staff will issue one warning to the offender (and parent/guardian, if applicable).

  2. If disruptive behavior continues, staff will ask the offender to leave the library premises. If the offender is a minor under the age of 18, he/she will be offered a telephone call to a parent/guardian for pick up. If no one can be reached, the Sheriff’s Office will be called.

  3. An Incident Report will be submitted to the County Librarian, who will review the library privileges of the person(s) involved.

Be responsible for those in your care.

All children ages 10 years old and younger must, at all times, be attended and adequately supervised by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult (someone 18 or older) who remains in the library building. Children ages 11 and up and dependent adults may be left unattended inside the library at the discretion of their parent or guardian for the period of time necessary to complete homework assignments and/or for quiet reading and browsing. Under no circumstances should any minor under 18 or a dependent adult be left unattended on library premises before or after operating hours.

If a minor under 18 years old or a dependent adult is left unattended after hours:

  1. The minor/dependent adult will be offered a telephone call to a parent/guardian for pick up. If no one can be reached, the Sheriff’s Office will be called immediately.

  2. If the parent/guardian has been contacted but the minor or dependent adult has not been picked up within fifteen (15) minutes of closing time, the Sheriff’s Office will be notified.

  3. Repeat incidents will be reported to the local Department of Social Services.

No selling.

Soliciting, distributing or posting printed materials on library premises without prior approval is prohibited. Unapproved posted materials will be removed and discarded.

Service animals are welcomed.

Certified Service Animals may accompany patrons into the library. All other animals are prohibited unless approved in conjunction with a library program.

Dress appropriately.

Shirt and shoes/sandals should be worn at all times. Clothing should be zipped and buttoned as intended.

Thank you for your cooperation. Please enjoy this and every visit to your local library.

CCPL Child Safety Policy

Currituck County Public Libraries encourage children of all ages to use and enjoy our facilities and resources. While the staff work to create a safe environment in the library, this work does not extend to the acceptance of responsibility to care for and/or watch over any minor(s) left unattended by the person responsible. The presence of unattended minors in the library is a safety concern to all. Children are at great risk in this day and age, even in a library.

All children ages 10 years old and younger must, at all times, be attended and adequately supervised by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult (someone 18 or older) who remains in the library building.

Children ages 11 and up may be left unattended inside the library at the discretion of their parent or guardian for the period of time necessary to complete homework assignments and/or for quiet reading and browsing. Children ages 11 and up should know how to reach an adult, and both child and adult should be aware of the closing time of the library.

All minors under 18 years old are subject to the same rules of conduct as any other library patrons and with the same consequences for not observing them, including being asked to leave the library. This possibility should be taken into consideration when deciding whether to leave a minor ages 11 and up unattended in the library.

Should any minor under 18 be left unattended at closing time:

  1. The minor will be offered a telephone call to a parent/guardian for pick up.
