What is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten?

The goal of the program is to read 1,000 books with your child before kindergarten. Studies have shown that reading with your child provides exceptional opportunities for bonding and learning. Read 3 stories a day and you will have read over 1,000 books in a year!

Who can participate?

Any child from birth until he or she enters kindergarten may begin the program at any time. This program is entirely self-paced.

What books count?

Any and all books count! Books read at storytime, by teachers, family, and—most importantly—you! You may also count repeated books and eBooks towards your grand total. (Don't forget to ask us how you can use your library card to access tons of free eBooks on cloudLibrary and NC Kids!)

Does the program have an end date?

There is no specific end date; the program ends when your child starts kindergarten.

How do we keep track of our reading?

When you sign up, you will receive a reading log to track your first 100 books. For every 100 book milestone, your child will receive a small incentive and a new log. Once you've reached 1,000 books, your child will receive a certificate of completion and a small prize!

How do I sign up?

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an ongoing, self-paced program offered at all three Currituck County Public Library branches. Stop in or call your local branch anytime to sign up!
