Library Card FAQ

How do I get a library card?

Bring a government-issued photo ID and proof of Currituck County residency to any public library in Currituck and fill out an application. If your photo ID does not have your current address on it, you can bring a recently-received utility bill (addressed to you) as proof of address.

In order for children under age 18 to get a library card:

  • both the parent/legal guardian AND the child must be present at the time of application, and
  • the parent/guardian must provide photo ID/proof of residency and sign the application agreeing to be responsible for all items checked out on the minor's card.

I got my library card in Pasquotank/Camden/Dare County. Can I use it at a Currituck County Library?

Yes! Library cards issued at any of the eight (8) libraries in the East Albemarle Regional Library System may be used at any library in the system. These include the Pasquotank Library, the Camden Library, all three Currituck County libraries (Barco, Corolla, and Moyock), and all three Dare County libraries (Kill Devil Hills, Manteo, and Hatteras). You may also return items owned by any library to any library within the EARL system as well.

Can anyone else use my library card?

You are legally responsible for anything checked out on your library card, so by default, we limit library card use to the person to whom the card was issued. However, if you are an adult patron and you wish to authorize another person to use your card, you may do so by:

  1. giving the person your card, and
  2. calling the library to let us know the name of the person you are authorizing use to, so we may note it on your account.

Please note that in doing so, you are accepting responsibility for any loss or damage for any items checked out by your authorized user.

I lost my library card, what should I do?

If you lose your library card, call the library as soon as possible and inform the staff of the loss. You are legally responsible for any items borrowed on your card until you have notified the library that your card has been lost. Replacement cards can be purchased for $1.00.

My card is blocked. How did this happen, and what do I need to do to get it unblocked?

Accounts become blocked when:

  • the cardholder has accrued more than $5.00 in fines, and/or
  • the cardholder has items overdue more than 5 days, and/or
  • the cardholder has lost items outstanding on the account, and/or
  • the card has expired.

When a card is blocked, nothing can be borrowed on the card. To reinstate your card:

  • reduce the amount of fines owed to below $5.00, and/or
  • return overdue materials to a library or book drop, and/or
  • pay for lost materials, and/or
  • renew your card by calling or stopping by to verify your information.

NOTE: Currituck County Libraries can only accept cash or checks for payment of fines and fees. Sorry, we do not accept credit or debit cards.

Do I need to show my library card to borrow library materials?

To check out materials, you will have to provide either your library card or your photo ID. Because you are legally responsible for everything borrowed on your library card, we require you to show your card or ID to protect you from someone falsely giving your name, or the staff accidentally charging your account with someone else's materials.

How long is my library card good for?

Newly-issued library cards are valid for one (1) year. In order to renew an expired card, we will re-verify your current address, phone number, and e-mail address. Renewed cards will be good for another (2) years.

However, if you have moved to a residence outside of the EARL service area, you will not be able to renew your card.

Can I use my library card for anything other than borrowing materials?

You can use your library card to:

  • renew and place holds on items through the EARL online catalog,
  • access eBooks and eAudiobooks via cloudLibrary and NCKIDS,
  • access digital materials via NC LIVE

In some instances, you will need a PIN to access online features. You may request a PIN (or change your PIN) at anytime by calling your local branch.
