How do I get a library card?

All residents of Currituck County can sign up for a library card free of charge.

To get a library card, bring:

  • a government-issued photo ID, and
  • proof of Camden, Currituck, Dare, or Pasquotank County residency or home ownership

to any Currituck County Public Library and fill out an application.

If your photo ID does not have your current address on it, you can show a recently-received utility bill (addressed to you), voter registration card, vehicle registration, printed personal check, lease, etc. as proof of address.

In order for children under age 18 to get a library card:

  • both the parent/legal guardian and the child must be present at the time of application, and
  • the parent/guardian must provide photo ID/proof of residency and sign the application agreeing to be responsible for all items checked out on the minor's card.

Click here to access the library card application.

What is a PIN and how do I get one?

A PIN is a password you set for your library card. You will need a PIN to reserve or renew items online and to access resources like cloudLibrary and NCLIVE.

You can set up or change your PIN by:

  • Visiting your local branch - You will be required to show your library card or ID in order to set up a PIN.
  • Calling your local branch - You will have to verify your account information first in order to set up a PIN.

How do I place an item on hold?

If an item you want from the library is checked out to someone else, you can claim a spot in line by placing a hold.

Holds can also be placed on items that are currently available—our staff will locate the item and have it waiting for you on the hold shelf at your preferred pickup location.

Holds may be placed several ways:

  • Log in to your account and request the item(s) in the EARL Online Catalog;
  • Ask a staff member for assistance at the circulation desk; and/or
  • Call the library during business hours.

When the item is ready for you to pick up, you will receive an e-mail or phone call. NOTE: You can change your preferred method of notification by speaking with a staff member.

Items not picked up within three business days of notification will be reshelved or returned to the lending library.

How do I renew an item?

Items may be renewed twice, unless your item is on hold for another patron.

You can renew items in-person at the library, online by logging in to your patron account, or by calling your local branch.

To renew your items online:

  • From the EARL Online Catalog, click on Log In at the top right and enter your credentials.
  • From the dropdown menu next to your name, click on Loans.
  • Click on the orange Renew Loan button next to any item(s) you wish to renew.
  • Your new due date will display next to the item(s) you have renewed.

How much are overdue, lost, and damaged item fees?

Overdue Fines

Overdue fines accrue at a rate of $.10 per day. There is a five-day grace period before fines start accruing. After the grace period, fines begin accruing retroactively from the first day the item became overdue.

Fines will stop accruing if the item is

  • renewed (if eligible),
  • returned, or
  • fines have reached the total replacement cost of the overdue item.

Lost & Damaged Items

Lost items and items that have been damaged beyond repair are charged to the patron in the amount of the item's replacement cost, plus a $2.00 processing feeIt is at the discretion of library staff to determine whether a damaged item can still be circulated or if it will need to be replaced by the patron.

We do allow patrons to replace lost/damaged items themselves if they are able to find an new, exact replacement of the item at a lower cost than our replacement cost. (For example, sometimes the items can be found for cheaper on Amazon). Please note that in either instance, the patron would still be responsible for paying the $2.00 processing fee to recatalog the item.
